US Trip part 5a Salmon ruins

The view from the balcony of my brothers townhouse
nice place to have coffee

We drove down to Farmington NM
Jepedo had some business to take care of
So we fired up the big diesel, and off we go
It was really boring, so I sat in the truck with the aircon on
listening to some great Mexican accordion music

On the way back we stopped in at the "Salmon Ruins"
It is named for the Salmon family who lived here and protected the ruins
In 1970 they were excavated
These ruins of the date from 1088 AD
More details here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_Ruins

Before we started the tour brodinski
decides to play with some cacti

For the rest of the day he was pulling the spines from his hand
it was quite amusing

Inside the center there is quite a number of artifacts from the site
plus, a history of natives from the area
What I found most interesting was the information on
the Navajo code talkers
During WWII Japanese intelligence broke every Allied military code
In may of 1942 a code was created using the unwritten Navajo language
Navajo code talkers, used their native tongue
to transmit secret military information

Looking south toward Shiprock NM
You can see it in the distance

The Salmon homestead

The walls are slanted in a the base
this is to keep the sun off of them
keeping the interior cooler

This is were they kept their children

Jepedo

The ruins

I was impressed with their stone craft

An ancient jacuzzi with one big ass jet

Jepedo trying to summon
the spirit of the
"Great Chile"

Native tools

In the center
there is a small square hole
it is the door to the under world

That is were all eternally happy people
end up

A red rock

Wildlife

Some of the displays around the site

early graffiti

damn kids

Yes they do serve Chihuahuas
they just call it chicken

"Spicy"

Mmmm Chihuahua

On the way back to Durango we passed this lovely fixeruper

US Trip part 4

I had arranged to meet my brother in Rock Springs, WY.
Where we would put my bike in the back of his truck
and then travel down to Durango, CO
He showed up just after 12:30 am
I let him in
he hit the bed, and started snoring
I had already been listening to Rob snore for two hours
so when my skanky brother started
Strange thoughts entered my head
The first
deal with them both
get a good nights sleep
make a run for the Mexican border
The second
put in some earplugs
I opted for the second
I am quite lazy :)

Our route would take us through the
Flaming Gorge Reservoir
into Utah, then back to Colorado

The wind was intense
I was quite glad that I was not on my bike

Storms came, and left very quickly

By about now I thought that I had heard all I could about the wonders of the
GREEN CHILE
but I had not reconed on the next
seven hours

The landscape lulled me

Bla bla bla green chiles

You would not be such a grump if bla bla green chiles

This is a photo of a photo of the dam
We could not get down to see it

By now the heat had started to climb
and I was wining

In Vernal
They have set up a memorial
For the Vietnam war

Woo Hoo Colorado

Great roads

This is leading into the town of Ouray CO.

Now headed over
Red Mountain Pass

The painted line IS the edge of the road

A few thousand foot drop to the bottom

Looking back towards Ouray

This stream runs through quite a band of yellow stone
That is why it is such a lovely shade

Near the top of the pass
was another small mining town

The next town that you come to is Silverton

This is Jesus of the mines

A few shots of Silverton

Just outside Durango
Is this amazing mineral spring

After stamping around in the waters for a while
my brother said" come wash your face"

No thanks :(

It was dark when we finally made it too my brothers place
So, unload everything and have some beer
